Caption: Imposing Cotopaxi,
which is the highest (19,700 ft) active volcano in the world, dominates the sky
some 75 km south of Quito, Ecuador. In this seismically active region, an
earthquake during the last week of March 1996 caused a major snow avalanche on
the slopes of the volcano that killed 18 people. Photograph taken at an
